Why does Windows Defender tell me "You haven't run a scan on your PC for a while" every day?

Since Windows upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary upgrade, I'm getting "You haven't run a scan on your PC for a while" at least once a day. How long is "a while"? Is Microsoft now expecting us to manually scan our machines daily? If not, how can I fix this?
