Why does the tablet on-screen keyboard switch from the numeric to alphabetic after a single numeric keystroke?

With limited use of one hand, I use the on-screen tablet keyboard as an accessibility feature. While programming using the Spyder application with Python, The keyboard with switch from the numeric face to the alphabetic face after a single key stroke on the numeric face. For example, 0.12 becomes: '0' '&123' '.1' '&123' '2' For a total of six keystrokes. Please help
