Why does my windows product key not work?

[Windows 10]

I'm receiving an error along the lines saying that my product key is not genuine. I've purchased an actual windows key thru the store, but now after some upgrades on my pc and having to reinstall windows my key does not work. The help/troubleshoot on Microsoft behalf is completely useless and just sends me in circles with no help what so ever.
