Why does Microsoft Security Essentials stop in the middle of searching for updates?

The Microsoft Security Essentials seems to freeze in the middle of the search for updates when I do a manual UPDATE. It will not continue to the downloading and installing. The green bar that indicates it is searching just stops midway. I f I click CANCEL scan it does not seem to cancel the scan. I get a pop up asking me if I want to let this software make a change to my computer. I click YES. The scan does not seem to stop as I go to my system tray and Microsoft Security Essentials has the little green arrow moving thru it.

I have to shut the computer down and restart and then do an update and it seems to be OK. It goes from searching to downloading to installing.

What is going on?

I like to use the manual UPDATE option.
