Why do I have to repay for minecraft pc addition when I've owned longer than Microsoft has

Why all of a sudden do I have to repay for minecraft (I've owned since around 2012) PC addition, when I owned it when it was mojang, think it wrong microsoft and xbox making people rebuy or get game pass to play something, we were told when we bought that we would have for life
