why cant my brightness be adjusted?

I had a Windows update last night, and my brightness can't be adjusted this morning. I can adjust the brightness bar, but it remains the brightest no matter how I move it. I can also click on the F4 and F5 buttons, which are responsible for adjusting the brightness, but that doesn't work as well. I have tried updating the display driver and removing the Windows update I made yesterday, but the problem persists. What else could be done here?
