why cant i adjust the volume on my laptop?

I went to youtube to try and watch a video and found that my volume button was turned off but the button was not on. i tried the volume up and down buttons but nothing happened. went to google tried restarting and nothing. NOTHING IS WORKING PLEASE HELP.
