Why are there two thumbnails showing on taskbar when only one folder is open?

Until recently, when I open a folder with File Explorer, a single thumbnail appeared on the taskbar. Now, for whatever reason, when I open a folder with File Explorer, there is an additional empty thumbnail appearing that cannot be closed.
