i love windows vista, dont get me wrong. but i do alot of coding work and ive
lost so much because of the stupid way the update system wont let you
postpone the updates untill you want them to be installed.

what is even more annoying is that they seem to be every time i turn the
bloody pc on.

if there if no way to change this setting i will produce a hack to allow me
to infinately postpone the update so that when i turn my pc on and it goes
you need to restart your pc to finish the update, i dont go '4 hours later'
and then forget all about it, be half way through a complex algorythm and
have my computer restart with no warning.

i dont believe the person at microsoft who thought this feature up was
thinking about the people who do work..... its annoying as hell.

otherwise, well done :) big thumbs up.

I don't find it stupid at all. I just open "Windows Update", click on
"Change Settings", and choose whichever option meets my needs. For you, I
would suggest choosing the option "Download updates but let me choose
whether to install them"

I hope this solves your problem.

I suggest turning off Updates totally until MS stops informing us of ones
that don't install. Yeah, I know "security" but I'll take my chances. :-)

*grin*

Actually -the method I find most useful is first - setting my personal
machines to download and notify about updates. That way I can look through
the list.

Then I open up a virtual machine and update it with the updates and run a
few tests for a few days. Just using the test virtual machine to make sure
the updates have no obvious effect. At the same time - I am watching these
newsgroups and waiting for any reported issues. Very seldom are there *no
reported issues* - as there are millions of configurations out there and the
chances of there being no issues is quite slim - but if I can read through
the reports and feel pretty good about it - I do a final backup of my system
(and depending on the reports I have seen - that could be an extra run of my
periodic backups or even a complete system image) and go ahead and install
the update(s) on my main systems.

Re: Why are there so many updates and how can i stop them restarti

Unfortunately the average computer user has no idea how to do this.
Personally I rather turn Updates off instead of spending all that time
researching each one. I've tried all kinds of complex solutions given here
like shutting down all spyware, antivirus, firewalls, deleting the contents
of the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, etc.. to no avail.

Simply put MS has bugs in Vista updates and there is no way of denying that.
I'll check back every month or so to see if things have gotten better.
Meanwhile I'll boot into XP to go online for more security.
