Why am I getting html in my email messages that flow through Mail client?

I have recently been receiving html code in lieu of or in addition to text in email received through the Mail client. I do not have this problem when I receive it via phone, or if I log directly into my email service provider (AOL), or if I route the AOL email through my Gmail account. That leads me to believe it is an issue with the Mail client app handshake. I do not find any setting or filters on the client app which might address this. Any ideas to fix this?
