Where are my pictures, my windows picture file is now empty.

On my laptop I had a pictures file, which I had all of my pictures in. I joined Microsofts 365 with the cloud storage. I synced it with my laptop. Guess what, my laptop pictures file is completely empty now. Now I didn't mind Microsoft taking a copy of my pictures to ad to storage but just completely taking my pictures so I can no longer see them on my laptop was not part of my plan. How do I get them all back in just my pictures file on my laptop. I am using windows 11. I use Opera browser and am on a HP laptop
