When windows 11 update causes mouse and keyboard to fail, how is one supposed to make anything happen?

Windows 11 updated January 31. When it seemed to be finished, computer was completely unresponsive. I had to force shut it down and reboot. The welcome screen appeared, but I could not log on with my password because neither the keyboard nor the mouse was responsive. I obviously could not use any keys to troubleshoot, because there was no way to get in. I tried a different mouse, but with no success. How does one deal with this, and why does Windows have updates that cause this problem?
