When I plug in my headphones, I hear a static noise sometimes and my laptop also does not detect the microphone on my headphones. How do I fix this?

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 14, open box, from Best Buy and everything runs okay on the computer. When I plug in my headphones though, I hear a weird quiet static noise sometimes and it can get annoying. I also realized that my laptop isn't using the microphone on my headphones, instead it's using the laptop microphone. I checked in settings to switch to my headphone microphone but I couldn't find it or add it. How do I fix these problems? I would like to get the microphone working at the very least.
