When I plug in either external headphones or external speakers the sound does not transfer to the external devices, it continues to emit from the lapt

I have a dell inspiron 16 laptop. When I plug in either external headphones or external speakers the sound does not transfer to the external devices, it continues to emit from the laptop speakers. I've had to UBreakIFix twice and even sent it to Dell's Lab and neither could fix the problem. Anyone that might be able to provide a solution, besides trashing the laptop, I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.Also I was told the sound daughter board and the mother board were both *** Email address is removed for privacy ***
