I have windows 8 on a dell laptop. I was just on the internet when my computer said that I should restart for updates. I closed the web browser and restarted my laptop. When it finished installing the updates, I restarted it again. When it came back on, none of the wireless connections were available. When I go to device manager it has that yield sign saying that I have problems with...

- Airplane Mode Switch

- Dell Wireless

- AMD High Definition Audio System

I've plugged directly into my router and now can access the internet but, since I'm just concerned with the wireless internet not work atm.

So I click on it and in the Device Status it says...

"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)."

So I click on Driver / Update Driver and it says...

"Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."

So what do I do now?

FYI, my router and modem are working fine. All other devices can see all the available wireless networks. I have not installed or downloaded anything on this laptop. It is strictly for writing and surfing the web. No games, No programs, nothing outside of what came with this computer is installed. I have made a point to do this so I have a computer I can write on that will, until today, be available when I need it.

Hello Larsonite,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community and providing us with the detailed description about the issue.

As per the description, I understand that you are experiencing issue with you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on the system.

I certainly understand your concern and will try my best to help you.

There can be a number of reasons for no internet connection in Windows, some common reasons that can cause these problems are:

  • Corrupted or incompatible drivers.
  • Missing updates.
  • Network connection settings.
  • Hardware or software problems.
  • Inappropriate distance from the router or obstruction.
  • Interference with other devices.

Let’s try these methods below and check if that solves the problem.

Method 1:

Step 1:

To diagnose whether this issue occurs in “Safe Mode”, let’s reboot the computer in safe mode and check if the issue appears there as well.

Safe mode is a diagnostic mode for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. This helps us in identifying whether the issue is due to some third party programs conflict. The word Safe mode appear in the concern of your monitor to identify which windows mode you are using.

Follow the steps given below and check if that helps.

  1. Type settings in search and click on Settings.

  2. Click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Recovery.

  3. Under Advanced startup, tap or click Restart now.

  4. Once your PC restarts, on the Choose an option screen, tap or click Troubleshoot.

  5. If you don't see the Startup Settings option, tap or click advanced options.

  6. Tap or click Startup Settings.

  7. Tap or click Restart.

  8. On the Startup Settings screen, choose the Safe Mode.

  9. Sign in to your PC with a user account that has administrator rights.

Step 2:

If the issue does not appear in safe mode, place the computer in clean boot state and check if the issue reappears.

Placing your system in “Clean Boot” state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0

If the issue does not occur in “Clean Boot”, then you may determine which application/service on the computer is causing this issue. This can be done by following the instructions for“Windows 8.1 and Windows 8” given in the section “How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a Clean Boot” from the same given link.

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, follow method 2

Method 2:

How to use an automated troubleshooter, please follow the steps in the link given below

Note: An automated troubleshooter is a tool that can find and automatically fix some problems with the PC. These troubleshooters are designed to fix specific problems and are very helpful as it saves a lot of time and effort.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cant-connect-to-network#1TC=windows-8

If the issue persists, follow method 3

Method 3:

How to update driver software, please follow the steps given below.

  1. Press “Windows +X” keys on the keyboard and go to “device manager”.

  2. Go to “Network Adapters” and expand it.

  3. Now from the list, choose the Network adapter (wireless network adapter) that is showing limited connectivity.

  4. Right click on your wireless network adapter and choose “Update driver software”.

  5. A new windows will open.

  6. Click on “Browse my computer for driver software”.

  7. Select “let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.

  8. Check the network adapters and see how many are listed. (Note: You may find two drivers here. One by Microsoft and the other from the Manufacturer)

  9. Choose the “manufacturer’s driver” and select next.

  10. Upon completion, you are advised to restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

If issue persists, follow method 4

Method 4:

Please refer to the Microsoft Help articles given below and check if it helps.

Why can’t I connect to a network?

Note: A lot of variables are involved when you connect to a network: cables, network adapters, drivers, and routers. So troubleshooting network connection problems can be challenging. This article will help you find and fix problems with wired (Ethernet) and wireless (Wi-Fi) network connections.

Method 1: Safe Mode

This did not work. All three issues remained. I also tried starting in Safe Mode with Network, with no success.

The issue still appears in both Safe modes so I skipped Step 2.

Method 2: Identify and Repair Network Problems

When I run the auto troubleshooter, it gets to a screen that says Plug an Ethernet cable into this computer. I did and clicked Check to see if the problem is fixed

I get a window that "says" it's fixed the problem but it hasn't! PLEASE READ THIS!!!

Problems Found: A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken: Fixed

THIS IS INCORRECT!!! This does not solve my Wifi. This only allows me internet access vie an Ethernet Cable.

Now that my Ethernet cable is plugged in, I again ran the Auto Troubleshooter. Now it says "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

I STILL DON'T HAVE WIFI or ANY AVAILABLE NETWORKS!

Method 3: Update Driver Software

The only driver listed is Dell Wireless 1705 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHZ)

It does not distinguish whether this is a "Microsoft" or "Manufacture Driver"

I get a window that says "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device". "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it."

"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)."

"If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."

Method 4: Why can't I connect to a Network

Automated Troubleshooter:

- Network Troubleshooter

- Internet Connections Troubleshooter

- Network Adapter Troubleshooter

I ran a troubleshooter for each of the options above. All of them responded with a window saying "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

I went through the entire "Why can't I connect to a network?" guide.

A wireless network adapter switch is turned off: I do not have a physical switch on my laptop.

Airplane mode is turned on: I checked this and it is turned off.

Disconnected or improperly connected cables: I'm trying to get wifi, I can get internet with a cable but that's not what is broken.

NOTHING HAS WORKED!!!

I don't think you guys are reading my issue correctly. I can access the internet with an ethernet cable. I can access the internet on another laptop with wifi but not this laptop.

I DO NOT SEE ANY WIFI NETWORKS

Before I could see and connect to my wifi network as well as, see all my neighbors wifi networks. Again, I do not see a single wifi network available.

This means it is not my router or it's settings.

PLEASE READ THIS!!!

What does this error mean and what is the solution for it...

"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)."

Researching my issue on Google suggested that I Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.

I HAVE NOT DONE THIS. It doesn't sound like a solution rather a go around. I would like confirmation if this is indeed the next step I should take.

Thank you

Can someone please help?

I'm finding it really odd that after a windows update, I can't see a single wifi network.

I've been really detailed and have tried all the possible methods offered. I do have a specific question and am a little surprised no one has answered or at the least, discussed it.

Please help, it's been a few days and I really do need this laptop for work. I was once pretty savvy with computers and troubleshooting. but as the software has evolved I've made a point not to go messing around or installing questionable programs.

In fact, this computer has Avast and Minecraft as my only two downloads. I don't even go to facebook or play flash player games on this. It's strictly for writing, emailing and playing a little Minecraft when I'm stuck in a hotel.

Can anyone help? Please?

Ok, no one wants to help? It's been days and I still can't connect. I've been all over this forum looking and trying every possible option.

I just don't understand why it would work and without any actions on my end, since the Windows updates it can't see a single Network. I think this is flaw in your guy's update. So, I'm getting frustrated that something done by Microsoft isn't being taken seriously.
