I am posting for Windows 7 but it is also applicable to earlier versions of Windows. I found out that the presence of a 4K sector drive on your system causes VSS errrors. Applies to internal and external drives. I have USB drive 3TB has 4K per sector and have been investigating problems with my backups. Some recent 2TB drives now come formatted with 4K per sector as well. Fsutil will report "Bytes Per Sector :" line (eg Fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo C: ) if you want to check.

I found I was getting VSS errors with backup software because the drive was plugged in, even if the 4K sector drive is plugged in and not in use. The presence of the drive is sufficient to interfere with VSS.

The only error messages I have seen are related to backup software but now I am asking about other components that use VSS - in particular:

Can system restore recovery points which also use VSS have problems? Could recovery points have bad file copies because a 4K drive had been plugged in during recovery point creation?

Does Windows Disk defragmentation have any dependency on VSS?

Anything else use VSS on a typical desktop PC that should concern me?
