Look, I'm pretty good on computers, but I've spent hours trying to get this
problem resolved on my wife's laptop. I have XP on my 2 desktops...no
problems at all. Looks to me like MS released Vista way too early and to
release updates that cause so many problems is plain idiotic. I mean, we
(the consumers) paid for this OS and expect it to work. If i bought a DVD
player and it kept replaying DVDs after 5 minutes into the movies, I'd take
it back and get a refund...so who should I take my OEM Vista to for a refund?
HAHA. XP is a nice, stable OS...why fix it if it ain't broken?!?!?!

I've read through all these posts about update issues...does MS tech support
really expect all users to be able to fix this problem as they described?!?!
Example...my grandmother is in her 70s and not technical at all...she uses
her computer everday. Would MS expect her to resolve this issue herself?
Using my previous example, that would be like Sony sending me a letter about
how to rebuild the circuit board if my DVD player when it breaks...complete
BS.

Yes, I can turn off automatic updates and do them manually and I do manual
installs most of the time anyway, but I also use Norton and when AUs is
turned off, i get constant messages from Norton telling me I need to turn
them on...duh!!

Micosoft...learn from your mistakes! Less is more. And I don't mean that
it LOOKS like less is going on! You people have so many more things running
in Vista that these problems are inevitable. Just because it looks prettier
and more streamlined, this doesn't fool me. Most folks look at it and say,
"wow, what a neat little pop-up to tell me what to do" not knowing that the
OS has many other things working internally that can go wrong. Remember,
there's just a bunch of super tiny on/off switches that make all this work.
Does anyone else but me realize that the more switches there are, the more
problems can occur? Well, i guess being the biggest software company in the
world, you have to find something for all those people to do!! Tell Bill
Gates that I never had these problems when I was running DOS. In DOS,
everything worked all the time. The only problems I ever ran into were
hardware related.

One more thing...what's up with the UAC?!?!? Does this really do any good
for home users? I can understand the necessity in a business environment,
but do you constantly need little pop-ups anoying you every time you want to
install or uninstall a program?!?! Seems to me it's just another thing ADDED
to and OS that didn't need to be ADDED.

Well...you tech support people get to work...that's what my money paid for.
I expect to see an update/patch to resolve this issue VERY SOON.

Think I'll check out LINUX.

Sry forgot to mention...this problem occurs with most recnt July 10 Vista
updates. Seems everyone w/ a laptop is having this issue....

I have also had this issue of updates failing to install and also have gone
through the steps clearing software distribution etc. (all to no avail) I
seem to have it down to three though but haven't tried to install these
today. It's also a pain when I am the only account and according to Vista an
administrator that it locks me out of areas on my hard drive and asks for all
the UAC stuff

DISGUSTEDFEDUPTIRED RE: Vista Updates

My sentiments exactly. I go back to early DOS also. I recently bought a new
PC with Vista preinstalled and I had a hard operating system crash that
require a total reinstall. Over 18 years of computing I don't think I ever
had that happen. I also never had a failed update either until several
recently. I turned off automatic update completely until they get the updates
worked out. I hate searching for which update is causing a problem.

As far as UAC it has little use in a home system but to bug you. I keep
turning it off but somehow it returns on my HP which tries to correct
security issues.

As for Linux I've tried several distos for a while but my printer and
scanner were not supported. Linux is ideal in many ways and I really liked
it. With Vista my scanner is not supported as well as some software that I
often use. Vista Premium no longer has the simple fax program and driver so
you have to go out and buy the software. For this reason I installed a
second hard drive with XP that I can dual boot into. I'm using Vista less and
less. XP never gave me any problems and ran smoothly on less hardware
requirements.

It totally amazes me people actually go out and buy the upgrade from XP to
Vista.

fedora has a considerably less gaudy UAC - it requires root's password
without dimming the screen for matters similar to those UAC pops up for.

WU support is without charge in the U.S., if you require technical support
for a Windows Update issue. They'll need to know what your problem is.
They are more verbose and nicer than most of the newsgroup responders.

If the quality of their help brings you back here, look at this first:

Well, Well, Well, I've been thinking seriously about buying Windows Vista
Full version, but after hearing what my wife said about it and seeing what's
on here, I think I'll wait quite awhile before wasting my money. I currently
am running XP Pro and really have no problems with it. I agree with everyone
in that MS released Vista waaaayyyy to soon without first working out all the
bugs. I was at their last road show here in Cleveland OH, and they made a
big what to do about Vista and all the bells and whistles it has, and how
it's suppose to be easier than XP to operate and navigate thru.....poppycock.
For $300.00 it had better get up and do a dance and cook my breakfast for me
too...lol. I want to thank everyone here for your input and helping me to
make my decission about Vista. My suggestion would be to go back to XP Home
or Pro and wait for MS to get their act together on this new OS. MS!!!!!! I
hope you're reading this, you have a lot of upset and disgruntled customers,
either fix the problem or give us (Your Customers/Patrons/Clients) a refund
for a defective OS that was released to early.

Actually, this update problem, that has affected many, is the first real
snafu that has affected some users of Vista.
The other problems some users have run into are two fold:
1) drivers are not up to par from 3rd party hardware/software
manufacturers. Which is ridiculous considering all the lead time (years)
they've had to develop proper drivers.
2) Vista is not an eye-candied up XP. It is a new OS and things are not
where you think they are if you're use to XP or 2K.
IOW, there is a learning curve one must go thru with Vista.
Also make sure your hardware is up to snuff, i.e., 2gigs of RAM min, 256
gigs of Video RAM min. Otherwise don't bother to try an run Vista as
you'll be frustrated.
Beyond that, it's a really great OS!
