Vista Home Premium on a Dell E1505,

Windows Update fails with a 800706BA error. (WU UI)

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" (Message
Box)

....svchost.exe_BITS ... exception at 0xc0000005 ... (Application event log)

Event may pull down several other services as well. WMI, Themes, Shell
hardware Detetction, Event Notification, Secondary logon, Task Scheduler,
User Profile, ... about 15 in total. Others not every, time but
svchost.exe_BITS always.

Where do I start to fix this?

Thanks, Jim

Vista Business on a Thinkpad x60
I have the same problem. I think it may be related to the adding and
removing of virus software but I have not been able to find any solution to
the problem yet.

Looking for answers......

Thanks, Kirk

Kirk,

As an update. I have had a support case open with MS on this problem.
After several back and forth e-mails including all the log files, their
conclusion is I need to reload the OS.

While this is a option on this new machine, it is not a very impressive
solution.

This machine has McAfee virus scan installed. I have no indication that
it is contributing to the problem.

Can you follow the steps decribed in article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520 and see if it helps?

If you continue to see anything mal-functioning after following the steps,
please reply to this post and I will try to troubleshoot the issue further.

Thanks

Anna,

Timing is everything... I reloaded the OS last night, wish I would have
stalled another day so I could test the kb methods.

Thanks for the reply. If I come across this problem again I will add your
suggestions to my list of things to try.

I used the steps described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520 and it
worked like a charm!!! I too was about ready to reload the OS, but finally
received the notification on this fix.

Finally!!! I'm no longer getting the error (800706BA) AND was able to
update my laptop.

Good luck!
