New computer 2 days ago. Initial configuration worked seamlessly. Seems to
operate correctly in every other way. Network connectivity verified; Internet
connectivity verified; can ping external IPs. Failed Windows Update the
first time I tried it.

Upon initiating Windows Update, I get a message that I have to first install
an upgrade to Windows Update. When I tell it to install, it fails and gives
me Error Message 80240038 saying Windows Could Not Search For New Updates.
Can't find this message anywhere on Microsoft or the Internet. The two
threads that did reference it were not helpful.

Three related notes:
1. Windows Update history shows no updates have occurred.
2. I have Windows Auto Update set to download and let me know when they are
ready to be installed. Thus far, I have not received any notice.
3. For unknown reasons that may, or may not, be related, I am unable to ping
either www.microsoft.com or update.microsoft.com. Can successfully ping my
ISP, Google, Yahoo, etc.

Anyone???

Simply wonderful. MS won't readily provide tech support for their own new
flagship product, and when I try to get it from the so-called professionals
they force me to refer to instead, I can't even get an acknowledgment. Must
be nice to be so secure in your own wealthy monopoly that you can afford to
basically tell your customers to take a hike...

You should also try searching for 0x80240038
(In general you will usually get more hits when searching for a hex code
with the 0x prefix than without it.)

When you use Google Groups or search the web you can search for both
forms at the same time by specifying them as: (0x80240038 OR 80240038)

Good luck

Hello Iceman, have you gotten any help anywhere? For me the first updates
show they installed properly, then I installed "Norton" and now there are 7
updates that keep failing to install. My machine is brand new too, couldn't
get one with XP on it.

I tried to go to that website for help, but nothing comes up. Do you think
it has something to do with our firewall? I don't like turning off my
firewall for anything,
Willioma
