VGA and DVI?

So we have a bit older pc that is conectected to display through VGA cable (both pc and display have VGA and DVI interface avalible) And recently we got another display that unfortunately has only hdmi input. So i borrowed a DVI cable from friend and a DVI to hdmi adapter. Conected the second screen to PC but nothing happend it was black.So i tried to disconect the VGA (first screen) from the PC and the second monitor came up!I tought i hadn't just enabled the settings to mirror my screen but it was turned on.Unplugging one screen conects the other one.
