Using XP Pro Updates won't install

Hi,
I'm using XP Pro SP 1 through the Parallel 3.0 VM on an Intel Macbook. Few,
if any, Security updates for XP have installed, and it seems maybe none will
install. The installation gets stuck every time and I've gotten blue screens
as well.

I checked my Update History and the main error code I get is:
0X800706BA.

And none of the 'KB' updates are installing either: KB905749 for example.

I appreciate any help. Of course my goal is to get SP2 installed if at all
possible.

Try one (or both) of these:
(You may want to do all of Solution (1) followed by 3-5 of Solution 2...)
(Also - download and install the FULL SP2 file - link at bottom of this
post.)

Solution to try (1):

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Then click "GO"

Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".


Solution to try (2):

1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by
cutting/pasting as directed.)

- Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
Yes when you are prompted.
- Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window:

Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
- Click Start, Run, type:

The Process may take sometime.

3) Download/Install Windows Update v3.

after an additional reboot - immediately after logging in.)

4) Download/Install the 927891 patch.

Start button --> RUN --> type in:

cmd /k net start "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)"

--> Click OK.

What is the message in the command prompt window that opens?
Does it tell you the service is already started, is unable to start, etc?

Thanks for responding. About the newsgroup confusion,...who knows ;) .

So No, I have not tried the RPC suggestion, although in all fairness to we
who are not as computer-literate, ...seeing this:

"The RPC service may not be started"

does not give one much instruction about what to do. So thanks for filling
in the blanks.

All that is now passe` since after doing a System Restore and then trying
again to do Updates, my Windows XP is now frozen solid.

I restored my Parallels desktop to a point very near to when I originally
installed XP Pro. I seemed to get 4 updates successfully installed, when XP
froze on the reboot. And now I don't know how to get out of the freeze.
Contr/alt/del doesn't seem to work even though I'm in a virtual Windows
Enviroment.

All I seem to be able to do is "end" my Parallels desktop and go back to the
Mac desktop.

Any ideas, short of re-installing XP all over again?

I have a theory on what may have caused this problem installing updates,
though you'll have to excuse my lack of precision in technical jargon.

When doing an install with XP SP1, apparently the disk will not catch the
ACPI element in the Bios on its own. IF one is on a WINDOWS machine, you can
press F5 or F6 (I can't remember) and make the installation detect the ACPI
configuration in the BIOS.

But I wonder, is this also a problem when installing XP on an Intel Mac? I
don't know, but it occurred to me that it could be an issue.
