USB ports on laptop don't pick up microphone input when directly plugged in, but does when using a usb hub

Hi I am currently using a Dell Inspiron 15 5510 laptop running on Windows 10. For the time that I've had it, the USB microphone that I've used with it has worked perfectly fine, but as of earlier today my laptop no longer detects input from the mic when it is directly plugged into the laptop. It does however pick up mic input if the mic is plugged into a USB hub that is plugged into the computer. The only thing of note that happened since it last worked was a few days ago I did a restart and system update, but after that it was working fine.
