Hi,

Have anyone encountered since March 31st 2020...

their USB external HDD keeps disconnecting and reconnecting along with Event IDs 51 and 140 errors appearing together for that disc drive in the events log?

Computer: Consumer notebook, i5

OS: MS Windows 10 Pro x86_64 EN, version 1909, build 18363.657

Storage: ...

Internal boot/system: HDD, SATA, Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD7500BPVT

Internal 2nd drive: SSD, SATA, Samsung 860 Pro 4TB - MZ-76PT40BW

External (problem occurs on this): HDD, SATA with USB3 out, connected to USB3 port of PC. Consumer grade external no-user-access-inside external disc. It has factory default FW. Western Digital My Passport Ultra, USB\VID_1058&PID_0820&REV_1012.

Edit 01: Drive has a little over %10 free space, 186 GB of 1.81 TB.

Power management: ...

All PM plans are set to:

1- USB selective suspend setting: Disabled, for both battery and plugged in

2- PCI Express \ Link State PM: Off, for both battery and plugged in

3- Turn off hard disk after: Never or Off or Disable, for both battery and plugged in

4- All sleep options sleep/hybrid/hibernate after: Never, for both battery and plugged in

5- All available USB Serial Bus Controllers/Hubs/Roots/Devices/etc.: "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." set to unchecked.

Sysptoms since March 31st 2020: ...

A- "The" external drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, during both idle and data transfer. Currently I can not pinpoint the timing/conditions of this behaivor, nor do not know if it is replicable under/due to some conditions.

B- Before/when/right after "the" external drive is disconnected/reconnected, events with IDs 51 and 140 occur and are visible via EventViewer.

C- There are no related errors/event IDs for the remaining internal drives; only for the external drive are present.

Thoughts: ...

a- I did not conduct any scannow or chkdsk on the external drive, neither "scan only" nor "fix/change/recover" since the drive's connection is unreliable.

b- I did not try the external drive on another, but USB2 connection of the notebook.

c- I did not try nor examine the external drive on another computer.

Noticable changes occured in OS:

i- Samsung Magician software updated without uninstalling manually on March 25th 2020.

ii- Kaspersky Total Security automatically updated from v19 to v20 on april 1st 2020.

iii- Latest Windows update appears to be auto update of "Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB4537759)" installed on March 25th 2020

iv- I can not recall its name nor the action time correctly but, during a " ... Cumulative Update for Windows 10 ...", update error, freeze, BSOD, thus forced manual shutdown&reboot occured. Possibly, but not sure, the update may be, "2020-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4554364)". It is not in the Installed Updates list.

v- Plenty of MS Office updates took place on April 2nd 2020.

vi -Skype for Business and OneDrive uninstalled on April 2nd 2020, after their updates completed.

Brainstorming but with unsure probabilities:

- External drive is near to corruption. (Try b, then c, then a)

- Latest Windows update(s) are faulty.

- Latest KTS is faulty. (Possible to downgrade)

- Latest Samsung Magician is faulty. (Possible to downgrade)

- External drive need FW update. (Possible to update)

- Current USB3 connection is faulty

- Cable assembly is faulty

- etc.

So, before going into deep and no/hard-return operations I would like to ask;
