Hello,

I have a USB camera which suddenly stopped working with my Windows 10 desktop, after several months of working just fine. The camera now shows up in Device Manager as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". I think a recent Windows Update might be to blame, since I have not installed / uninstalled any applications, drivers, or made any other changes to my system recently, aside from letting Windows Update run.

Here is the event log from device manager:

Here are the troubleshooting steps that I have already attempted:

  • "Update Driver" in Device Manager -- Windows thinks the current driver (10.0.19041.488, date 6/21/2006) is already up to date.
  • "Roll Back Driver" in Device Manager -- This option is unavailable, the button is disabled.
  • "Disable" in Device Manager, then reboot -- No effect.
  • "Uninstall Device" in Device Manager, then reboot -- No effect.
  • Move the device to a different USB port -- No effect. I tested several ports which are still working with other devices.
  • Uninstall update KB4601319 (installed 2/13/2021) -- No effect.
  • Uninstall update KB4601050 (installed 2/11/2021) -- No effect.
  • Uninstall update KB4592438 (installed 2/14/2021) -- Windows won't let me uninstall this update.

Beyond the updates mentioned above, the next most recent update was 1/14/2021, too long ago to be a potential culprit. I used the camera on the morning of 2/21/2021 with no issues.

Can anyone recommend any further troubleshooting steps? Thanks.
