USB audio adapter works fine but then randomly disconnects

I bought a USB audio adapter in order to hear the audio and also to use my microphone on a pair of headphones. It works well however I find that after a couple minutes the audio stops playing entirely. I can tell that the USB is still on due to flashing red light but still there is no audio playing. The only way to counteract this is unplugging the USB and plugging it back in again which fixes it temporarily.Is there a permanent fix?
