Hi
whenever there is a new update waiting to be installed, I have to cross my
fingers.
If I shut down the computer, windows says 'Installing new updates - do not
power off your computer, windows will shut down automatically'. Or similar!
4 hours later, I am forced to shut it down - I am sure it shouldn't take 4hrs.

If this doesn't happen, some of the programs don't open after an update. My
only option seems to be to use system restore. It is only when I restore the
PC to the state before the updates that every works again.

How can I stop these annoying updates?

I should add that my OS is Vista home premium.

Vista Features Explained: Automatic Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/windowsupdate.mspx

1. Open Windows Update - click Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows
Update.

2. In the left pane, click Change settings.

3. Click the automatic updating option that you want.

4. To get important and recommended updates for your computer, under Recommended updates,
select the Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about
updates check box.

5. Click OK.

If you are prompted the administrator password or confirmation, type the password or
provide confirmation.
