Update will not install + external harddrive

After several attempts to install updates using Automatic updates, I became
very upset that the darn things would not install.
I finally realized that the updates were being downloaded to my Seagate
external hardrive instead of my computer's harddrive.
I had no problems once I disconnected the external harddrive, but can anyone
tell me how this happened?
I would relly like to make sure this does not happen again.

Because the external HD has more available free space then the system's HD.
Either free up space on the internal HD or just disconnect the external
one prior to updating.
You can set Automatic Updates to " Notify but do not download or install
them " via the Automatic Updates applet in the Control Panel.
When you're notified of impending updates, disconnect the external HD,
and then approve the update downloads.

Thank you for your response to my question. My internal harddrive has over
100GB remaining and my external actually has less free space remaining. I
only have 50Gb remaining out of 250GB since I use the external for wireless
access for 5 family computers. ( my 3 teens have a large collection of
pictures and music)
Thank you once again. I just think it is odd that it is doing this and if I
hadn't thought to check the external drive, I never would have realized that
this was the problem.

not what is to be expected.
