I called microsoft yesterday asking what will be done via this problem for
those who cannot get updated drivers for the Sigma Tel audio driver. The
problem is Sigma no longer makes audio drivers and passed it off to another
company who told me they are not making updated drivers at all for this type
of audio codec.
So how do you get updated drivers if you cannot? I have been on many forums
via Dell and Gateway and thousand of customers have the same problem.

First microsoft was giving advise to uninstall the driver and allow Vista to
find its own drivers for this.
Many did this and found they still had no sound.

Microsoft also said to uninstall drivers, put sp1 on and then reput back the
driver for sigman tel.
Many who did this found after the sp1 install, when trying to put back the
driver, Vista now came back with an error msg saying "This driver is not
compatable for Vista"
so they wound up again with no sound.

Well after talking to the tech and he confirmed that this is what was being
said- now when people call in they are telling them not do do anything and
wait because microsoft is working on a solution to this.

They say it will show up in Windows Update either a patch or fix for this
problem.

I received this morning an email from microsoft that I am passing in here,
some of the info like email or confirmation number has been taken out just
for security.

see below

this will confirm what microsoft told me, I received an email today

This is Smitha Nair with Microsoft Windows Technical Support.

I am following up regarding your Windows service request . Here is an
outline of the steps that we agreed upon during our call:

Problem Description:
Needs information on installing service pack 1 on a computer with sigmatel
audio drivers.

Troubleshooting Performed:
We did not perform any troubleshooting onthe computer.

Action Plan:
Kindly wait for further updates from microsoft which addresses the sigma
audio driver compatibilty issues with service pack1.

My goal is to ensure that your experience with Microsoft Windows Technical
Support leaves you pleased with our products and services.

If you have any feedback regarding Microsoft support, we would be glad to
hear from you. If you would feel more comfortable speaking with someone
else regarding my service, Sumit , my manager, would be very happy to hear
your comments and suggestions.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Technical Support.

Let's hope that Microsoft can persuade/negotiate with Dell and Acer
[ who now own the Gateway brand ] to come up with a suitable *signed*
driver for Vista SP1.
The system manufacturers are *supposed* to provide support for
hardware/drivers *and* the Operating System under their agreement with
MS for discounted [OEM] versions of Vista. As long as the system is
under warranty it's *their* responsibility.
Gasp ... some manufacturers actually do issue updated drivers for
systems no longer covered by a warranty !

When the company that provides OEMs with said drivers and hardware
becomes extinct or is bought by another, a *reputable* company should
step into the breach and provide updated drivers to replace
*incompatible/insecure* ones. After all, that is the issue here,
unsigned drivers.
MS provided OEMs and hardware manufacturers with plenty of advance
warning on the need to digitally sign drivers for Vista.
Whomever authored the drivers for Sigma Tel apparently felt that they
could/would not do this. Perhaps they were incompetent or knew the
company was about to be sold ... who knows? The company that bought
SigmaTel does not have to update the drivers but, would you buy hardware
from them in the future if they do not ?
The system manufacturers *should* if they want their customers to be
loyal to them. I wouldn't bet on that happening without MS stepping in.

In this instance, I'll give MS credit for going the extra yard in trying
to alleviate their customers' pain.

Sigmatel was recently bought by IDT. It's up to IDT to submit newer and
vista sp1 compatible hd audio drivers to Microsoft so that MS will post them
up at the Windows Update site. So far there are none posted at WU as I've
checked myself.

Can we get an "MVP" update on this post please? This is a bit upsetting that
I can't get sp1, which means if sigmatel, or IDT, or whoever owns it now
never gets an updated driver, I can't get sp2,3,etc... All Gateway tells me
is, "just don't update" Kinda like telling the doctor "it hurts when I do
this" and the Doc replies, " well, don't do that." any update on this
subject would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Brian

I have 2 PCs - A sony and an Oqo 02. Both are blocking SP1 due to this issue.
Isnt it time it was sorted?

Me,

Microsoft chat support actually took control of my system and was able to
get sp1 on my system, they deleted the sigmatel, rebooted, let it find new
hardware and download the generic driver, then deleted it again, updated to
the idt codec ( that doesn't work) then I was able to get sp1, after sp1 was
updated, I then deleted the idt codec and manually reinstalled the sigmatel
driver from my manufacturers site, it works fine :) sp1 will get blocked by
the sigmatel driver, but once you get sp1, you can re install the sigmatel to
get your sound back and so far I have noticed no conflicts.
