Unusable -- vista stuck configuring/installing updates after logoff

Hi, As per "system properties" I have vista SP2. When I check control panel --> "update history", it shows SP2 as successful. But when I check "installed updates" it says no updates are installed. So I cannot even uninstall SP2.


When I logoff , it says installing updates stage 3 of 3: 72% complete.


When I try to shutdown, it says configuring updates.


After some 8-10 hours, it will restart and display login page.


Please help as this system has become unusable
