I have been going round and round in circles trying to fix a problem with USB mice.
Here's the problem:
- I have two Windows 10 laptops
- Windows 10 is up to date on both laptops
- I have two USB Mice
- Neither of the mice are now recognised by either laptop
- Both mice work perfectly well in a third laptop running Linux Mint and also on a Raspberry Pi
I have tried the following steps:
- Updated all the drivers, including USB
- Adjusted the USB power settings so the ports are not powered down to save power
- Run the Hardware Troubleshooter
- Booted in safe mode
- Removed the mouse driver
Having carried out the last action, I discovered some very strange behaviour:
- Having removed the mouse driver, I then plug in either of the mice.
- The system instantly recognizes it as a USB Mouse and installs all the driver.
- I get all the normal notifications telling me that it has been discovered, installing it and then ready to use.
- The mouse works fine for between 5 and 20 minutes.
- I then get a notification that the USB device is not recognized.
- Device Manager shows an Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) entry in the USB section.
- The system then refuses to recognise the mouse no matter how many times I pull it out and plug it in again or restart the machine.
- If I plug the other of the two mice in, the system recognises and the pattern repeats.
- After that, the system fails to recognize either device.
This is driving me insane!
