Unable to import photos directly to my files

Connected my iphone 14 to the my windows laptop using a wire and even had the connection sound. It then immediately opens my photos app on my laptop and prompts my phone to allow photos to be access. However in the file explorer no photo folder shows up at all. At first I thought that i could just import it from the photos app but i can only import it into my laptop icloud which does not have enough space. Is there any way to import my photos directly through file explorer.Just a few months before I was able to do it with my iphone Xs so im abit confused why im unable to now.
