Transferring files to external hard drive.

Sometimes [ not every time ] when I try to transfer a film from my laptop to external hard drive , it starts and then stops immediately and I get the message, " this drive already has a file named...." . When I look at the drive it has a file named the same but is empty. If I try to , " replace the files in the destination" I am told " there is not enough space to copy this item". This only happens occasionally .
