System thread exception not handled

I use a dock to allow multiple monitors. When I turn on my laptop, the dock will not run (it starts up with just the laptop monitor). If I then unplug and replug in the USB c for the dock, I will get the blue screen with the error "System thread exception not handled" the machine will then restart, and the multiple monitors will now work. This has been happening for a year, through multiple updates. Any ideas what to troubleshoot?
