Hello,
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium. I am able to create System Restore points with no errors.
Now I'm trying to fix a BSOD problem by using one of the recommended methods: restore the system to an earlier time. However when I try to restore my system to an earlier restore point, I get this message:
System restore was not completed successfully
Failed to extract copy of the directory from the restore folder
Source: %SYSTEMROOT%Registration
Destination: ComPlusStaging
Every restore point I've created fails this way. I came here and read in a few places that the Volume Shadow service must be running in order for System Restore to work. I checked my services and found that System Shadow service was indeed disabled. I've enabled it but have a few questions before I start creating Restore points again.
If the Volume Shadow service is required in order to get System Restore to work, why wasn't I warned when I created the Restore Points? Every Restore Point was created successfully. But The Volume Shadow service was not running.
Why doesn't System Restore warn the user if necessary services are not running when creating Restore Points? Seems like an inane omission.
Without that warning, I've been creating System Restore points for months, and I never knew that they were useless without Volume Shadow service running.
OK fine, the restore points are all useless, no thanks to Windows System Restore. Are there any other services besides Volume Shadow that need to be running?
Thanks for your help!
