system recovery problem

I am using Windows XP Service pack 3.

I downloaded a song from a website that I am a member of and for the first

time, it attached an add on that now gives me pop-up adds. I removed the add

on from my control panel, but I am still getting these pop-up adds every time

I connect to the internet. I tried to do a system restore for an hour or two

earlier from when I downloaded the song, and system restore would not let me

do a download. The message was that system restore could not restore

computer to date I choose, and to try a different date....well I also

downloaded Norton Security Suite the same day I downloaded the song and I

didn't want to go back any further becuase I didn't want to lose the Norton

Security Suite.......Also when I try to manually enter a date for System

Recovery and changes the date to Read todays date and the day before that I

entered, and then when I try to recover for that and gives me the same

message as when I choose the date only on the calender......Please help I

never got these adds before and I need to find out why my System Restore is

not working or if I am doing something wrong.

If restore reset its date(s),then it must have had a problem within the OS,

maybe open event-viewer & get some details..Also,in disk-clean up utility,

locate "more options" tab,go to bottom,click "delete all but most current

date"...You might even turn off restore for a few pc starts,run disk-clean,

defrag,then turn on restore.Recovery is also known as reinstallation of OS.

System restore won't fix this problem. You've infected your system via a

download, and you don't clean that with System Restore.



Download and run ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com), and allow it to delete

whatever it finds. This will remove some of the potential infections, and

also speed up subsequent scans since there will be thousands fewer files to

check. Then download and run MalwareBytes, run a full scan, and let it

delete what it finds. You may also find that HijackThis helps, but that's

a more advanced tool.



Another problem is that it's likely that the restore points are also

infected, and are useless. To fix this, turn System Restore OFF, then on

again and create a new restore point after removing all the malware.

And, check that the REstore Point will work.
