subscriptions

not exactly sure what the deal is with 'subscriptions', however, when i activated it, it didn't say 'subscription'. the only way i found out was 90 days later, my product was 'not genuine'. what are these subscription keys, and how can i get support for them ? is microsoft selling / generating these keys ? and why is this key activating my product instead of activating a subscription ? surely microsoft had the foresight to figure out that this marketing paradigm with the subscriptions is suspicious
