This post is submitted mainly for the information of others. It describes a problem which may have a solution.
In recent days I have been plaqued with the above BSOD during the "Shut-Down" process on my desk-top PC. The BSOD states that it will restart Windows and within seconds, enters the traditional boot process with no apparent problems. This leads to a never-ending cycle where the machine cannot be shut down. The PC has been running Windows 7 - SP1 with no apparent difficulties and its configuration has not been altered.
The problem seemed to occur after I had connected my old Toshiba Laptop running Windows Vista over a hard-wired home LAN in order to transfer some of the files from the PC to the Laptop. I had done this many times before with no apparent difficulties. From here, I was lead to the Microsoft KB2549036 which suggests a problem with an API causing these symptoms.
The problem appears when I "Shut Down" the Laptop first and the try to "Shut Down" the PC some time later. It seems that the Laptop re-boots itself and re-establishes the LAN connection with the PC. With this connection in place, the PC throws up the above BSOD and then executes a Restart as is usual for BSOD error conditions. Provided I execute the "Shut Down" of the PC in the short period between when the Laptop is "Shut Down" and when it re-establishes the LAN connection, the BSOD on the PC is avoided and it "Shuts Down" normally. This may also point to a problem with the "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface" on the PC or the Laptop or both.
I do not understand the "Wake on LAN" facility of the PC or the Laptop and would appreciate any help here. Other readers may suggest that I simply unplug the hard-wired LAN connection from the Laptop.
Has anybody else had similar problems??
