stopping a message being forwarded to an old mobile number

I am struggling to remove my old work mobile number from my contacts. Currently I get messages to my personal number but when I reply, the message goes to the sender and my old work mobile. Consequently I can no longer see my responses to the message. I can't find the old mobile number anywhere in my contacts lists.. can anyone help???
