It is * EXTREMELY * important that one read this prior to any attempt to
apply XP SP3:

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717/

There have been NUMEROUS posts in this newsgroup about the installation
failure of SP3 and/or issues arising after the installation of SP3 that
are all ** directly related to antivirus software monitoring a system **
while SP3 is being installed.

Also, *any other* anti-malware software that is either actively
monitoring the system or 'guarding' registry keys SHOULD be disabled
prior to any installation attempt. EX: SpySweeper

Do yourself a favor and read this article in order to avoid unnecessary
grief and anguish.

Seconded. Also see:

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

Spyware Doctor 5.5 or earlier versions of Spyware Doctor may cause Windows
XP Service Pack 3 to stop responding when you try to install or to uninstall
the service pack:

<IMHO>
Temporarily disable all real-time protections afforded by your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications, and any third-party firewall
prior to installing SP3. If you disable a third-party firewall, make sure
you then enable the Windows Firewall: The machine should not be connected to
the internet without an active firewall.

NB ZA Free users: Uninstall ZA Free via Add/Remove Programs and enable the
Windows Firewall before installing SP3.

After installing SP3 /and rebooting twice/, check to make sure your
real-time protections have been re-enabled; If you disabled a third-party
firewall, remember to re-enable it and disable the Windows Firewall.
</IMHO>
