In System Config Utility there's a whole list of progs which load at

startup. OK so far. If I uncheck any of them I am automatically taken to

Selective Startup and if I OK my changes I will then get various

messages at various times, particularly on a reboot telling me I'm on

Selective Startup. How do I just uncheck what I don't want and let it go

at that?

There is an option box that disables reminders that selective startup has

been used. Alternately you can use a more comprehensive startup tool,

SysInternals' AutoRuns which doesn't have any nag screen/reminders if

Startup changes are made:

Thanks, but I can't see why unchecking an option should invoke Selective

Startup. It's not just the pain of getting nagged, it's bugging me as to

why I can't just uncheck something if I don't want it in Startup. End of

story. Finito. Fin. Done. Exit. OK. Over.

I note that computer magazines and the like which have articles on this

sort of thing never mention the points I'm making. It just seems so easy

when they do it!

msconfig is not a start up manager. It is a troubleshooting tool. If

you are using it as a startup manager, you are not using the tool as

it was meant to be used. Get a start up manager if you don't like the

way msconfig works.

When you make changes in msconfig and confirm them, it creates a new

start up entry that will not be removed until you check the box

acknowledging the change after a reboot. That is what it is supposed

to do. You should only get reminded once if you respond

appropriately. If it doesn't behave, something is broken.

It creates an entry like this in the startup portion of the registry:

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

You can enter that command into Start, Run and see the same message.

Acknowledge the message and the entry gets removed.

What are the various messages you see at various times?

Remember, MSConfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a

"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the

command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To

cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings

to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs

from your startup configuration.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as

simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to

"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start

Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start

Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in

the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
