spyware alert

While I was browsing, an announcement "popped up" that froze the screen and then a voice over intoned that a piece of spyware had been placed on my computer and I was warned that I needed to contact an 855 number that was supposedly connected to Microsoft support to remove it. I was cautioned that any activity I would make may be compromised, especially as regards to use of credit cards. The screen looked official. I immediately closed the computer and rebooted and ran a scan with Defender, which showed nothing. Should I be concerned?
