Snipping tool taking screenshots

Hi all, I frequently use the snipping tool on windows as part of getting images for work. I used to open it up, click the + button and then crop the area of the screen I needed. In the last few days it's been just automatically taking a full screen shot. As soon as I click the + button it just snaps the whole screen and I have no chance to select a specific area. Any idea what has happened?
