SITE DOWN?

Has anyone else had trouble accessing the windows update or microsoft update
site? i get the chekcing active x message then after 2 or 3 minutes a timout
and and error page? i assuming there is a site outage or technical gltich? We
go to this site 10 times day almost evry day and never have a problem.

Works here. (Three different internet connections tested.)

Routing issue on your end?

Check the WindowsUpdate.log for a possible clue.
Start > Run > %windir%\windowsupdate.log , press Enter

Since it 'sounds' like a communication failure between the system and
the update servers is occurring, read this section first " Example of a
common failure '.
Any FATAL entry should be accompanied by an error code. Post the entries
just prior to and following any FATAL entries.

Checked through windowsupdate.log

When I had automatic updates turned off, saw fatal error. When I turned it
back on looks like everything downloaded whether I wanted it or not.

Looks like I can no longer manually update through windows update with
automatic updates turned off. Also will not let me pick and choose which
updates to install.

This is not good. I need some control over what gets loaded - last winter
there were a few updates that messed with our browser-based administrative
software.

Also, I do not want to use microsoft updates - I want windows updates.
Microsoft tries to do too ambitious a load, tries to update office apps that
are already updated and errors out when it can't.

Define "turned off". The Windows Update website should work with the Automatic
Updates control panel set to "Turn off Automatic Updates" (I've just checked
this and it works on my test box) but it won't work if you have disabled the
Automatic Updates service.

(Oddly enough, Windows Update also doesn't work if Automatic Updates is
configured to start manually, even if it is already running. I'm not sure why
this is, but it isn't really a problem; just leave the service on Automatic and
disable automatic updates via the control panel if required.)

What I did was go into the security center in control panel and under the
applet to change automatic update settings, I clicked the radio button to
turn off automatic updates. I did not go into the management console and
turn off the automatic update service.

Can I just do a registry hack to change from the Microsoft updates website
back to the Windows update website? Is there still a separate website to
only download windows updates or has that been changed also?

Have you tried turning AU back off (in the way you describe) and seeing whether
the Windows Update site is still having problems?

Don't know about this. There is a supported way to uninstall Microsoft Updates
and revert to Windows Update - one of the links on the website I believe - but I
guess if the web site is broken you can't do this. :-(

If turning AU on resolves your problem, perhaps you could leave it on "notify
only" at least long enough to switch back from MU to WU?
