I have been trying to get the new Service Pack 3 to install on my computer
for days.
I have even tried to download the update more then once thinking I
downloaded a corrupt file. It will run through the installation of the files
then it tells me it's not allowed. It then tells me that there was a service
pack 3 setup error, and that the install did not complete. After I click 'ok'
windows runs the removal wizard and uninstalls everything that it already
completed. This has happened several times already. Has anybody encountered
this already. If so how do I fix it. The computer is running fine but I've
had to shut off the automatic updates until this get fixed...

Does it say, "Access Denied"?
It is very important you give the exact error message...

Yes it does say access denied. I'm sorry I thought I put that in the first
message

You probably need to get Subinacl.exe, make a Reset.cmd file
and run it - exactly as Method 3 instructs you to do at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/949377

You've probably already tried that link's Methods 1 & 2.

I copied the text and pasted it into notepad, but when I tried to 'run' it
the c prompt screen just flashed for a moment then it did nothing else. Did I
do something wrong????

I take it from another of your posts in this thread that you didn't install
SubInACL.exe after you downloaded it, but have that fixed now.
The Reset.cmd file composed of the script copied into notepad will
chug away for quite some time when run if Method 3 is done *exactly.*

Note this preface to Method 3: " *Important* This method is intended for
advanced computer users. If you are not comfortable with advanced workarounds,
you might want to ask someone for help, or you might want to contact Microsoft

I had the same problem as Eric, with the "Access Denied" message when I
tried to install Windows XP Service Pack 3. I had disabled my
trendMicro anti-virus as suggested by Microsoft, but without success.

I then uninstalled 2 free anti-spyware programs on my PC. These were
Spy Sweeper (from Webroot Software) and Norton Security Scan (installed
as part of a Google Pack). Then, with TrendMicro anti-virus still
temporarily disabled, I was able to install Service Pack 3 without a
problem.

I don't know which program caused the problem with Service Pack 3 since
I uninstalled both. I hope this advice may help others.

Method 2 at KB949377 says to disable security scanners.
MowGreen posted a buckshot link for XP SP3 prep/problems:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717/

My impression is that XP's SP3 is a lot less traumatic than its SP2.

Hi Michael

Neither Spy Sweeper and Norton Security Scan can be temporarily
disabled. In fact these 2 programs should only run when I activate
them. However, I found that I had to uninstall them to get SP3 to
install.

Horse hockey! And Norton Security Scan isn't an active process anyway:

<QP>
Norton Security Scan does not integrate with the operating system to provide
real time protection against viruses and spyware, but instead scans your
hard drive for viruses and spyware "on demand", or at a given point in time.

Hi PA Bear

I am well aware that Norton Security Scan and Spy Sweeper should not
have active processes. I suspect it may be something to do with their
registry entries. Microsoft says "You may receive these error messages
[Access Denied etc] if permissions for one or more registry keys are
restricted in a way that prevents the update of those registry keys".

I posted the method I used to install SP3 based on my empirical
evidence, hopefully helping others with similar problems.

Perhaps MS MVPs can enlighten us about the mysterious way Microsoft
updates work and why some of us have problems despite following all
their advice. I, for one, would be keen to learn.

PS: If you know how to temporarily disable Norton Security Scan and Spy
Sweeper, please let us know. I couldn't find any way to do it, that's
why I uninstalled them. And, as I said earlier, I don't know which
program caused the problem with SP3.

<snip>

In truth - no idea. In the end the most likely explanation hovers around
the one fact I give so often...

There are millions upon millions of combinations of software/hardware out
there. There is no possible way Microsoft (or anyone) can test a patch of
any sort on all of those different combinations. So there is no way of
knowing exactly whom might have issues and who will not. It could come down
to even versions of some software or driver release even. Examples: Norton
AV 2006 might give cause trouble with some particular patch because of
something in its engine, while Norton AV 2008's engine is not the same and
thus does not cause that issue. Someone else might have Spybot Search and
Destroy 1.3 installed and not use TeaTimer while another person has Spybot
Search and Destroy 1.4 installed and does use TeaTimer. Or maybe someone
installed IE7, someone else did not. Someone installed a particular
released patch - critcal or no - and someone else did not. The
combinations/differences are numerous and impossible to predict/test for.

As for things not working when following an MVPs advice - *shrug* - we are
you. The only difference is we *might* know more about a particular subject
and we have decided to share that knowledge here. There are many people
here that are not MVPs that do the same thing - so taking advice from an MVP
vs anyone else should not really be the factor. Everyone posting here
(except a select few spams, possibly) is human and they can make mistakes
and it is unlikely they know everything (especially everything about your
particular setup/situation.)

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

1. Norton Security Scan is not running in the background at all times. You
must initiate any/all scans. If you didn't initiate a scan, there's nothing
to disable.

2. Spysweeper, however, does have a "real-time protection" module running in
the background at all times and this module *does* restrict the ability to
update the Registry. As such, this "real-time protection" *must* be
disabled before installing SP3 or any other update that will make changes to
the Registry.

NB: This module does not load in Safe Mode.
