Security Essentials unable to update for over a year

I have this problem 0x8007043c For nearly a year i cannot check for updates, when i run security essentials scan the, stop / pause button grey's out frequently !! ( as if i am clicking to stop or pause the scan ) But i am not clicking this button !!! I have uninstalled and re-installed on numerous occasions on initial first scan after each installation it shows 129 infected files but after the scans i see no record of the 129 files being Quarantined or destroyed, In fact no record of them at all; in the Security Essentials log. I have tried everything i know is there anyone who may be able to throw light on this problem please ?
