I've been using MSE for quite a while (nearly since it was first released), with no problems.
(It rarely reported anything, but I do practice "safe computing," so I expect this machine to be "clean" 99%+ of the time.)
Today MSE reported that I had not run a scan for a while. I had run a quck scan yesterday... so I started a full scan... approx. 11 hours ago... NOT connected to the network.
It ran and ran and ran - and suddenly failed, approx. 1 hour ago; looked like it was perhaps 90% finished.
Machine became completely unresponsive; had to power-cycle to get any response.
Found this in the event log (removed personal/identifying info):
Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft Antimalware
Date: 11/24/2015 8:05:55 PM
Event ID: 3002
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
Description:
Microsoft Antimalware Real-Time Protection feature has encountered an error and failed.
Feature: On Access
Error Code: 0x8007043c
Error description: This service cannot be started in Safe Mode
Reason: Antimalware protection has stopped functioning for an unknown reason. In some instances, restarting the service may resolve the problem.
?? Why was it trying to start in Safe Mode?
What should I look for, and do I need to run another (12-hour!!) full scan?
(A quick glance at the event logs doesn't reveal anything noteworthy, but I'll admit it's been years since I was intimately hands-on with Windows event logs. Still, I've been working with these platforms since the XP days.)
