There is probably a quick answer to this - don't use a 42" tv as a monitor. I don't have anywhere to store my tv yet and a 32" monitor is easier to store.
I can display my 1920x1080 desktop perfectly fine on the tv (Sony Bravia 1080p). The problem comes when only a few (and some pretty retro) games actually display at 1080p perfectly, but most games (AAA) appear scaled up, making it very difficult to read text, even though settings are set to 1080p. I check my GPU settings and the games are optimized for 1080p (Nvidia gtx 555 - I know, pathetic - but this shouldn't change anything across my machine). When I alt-tab out of these games, the desktop is illegible, like at 480p or worse.
I did a little research and will continue to do more as the suggestions didn't work. I'm making my way towards a new computer in the meantime. My main curiosity is why it's only when I launch a game that my resolution takes a made hit, but when I quit the game it's fine again. (All settings everywhere set to 1080p).
Thanks for any help until I get my long needed upgrade.
