Screen freezes when changing resolution

I play games on a Surface pro 7, even though that's a bad idea. But when I want to play games like CS2 or Fortnite, I have to change the resolution so that I can get higher FPS. I've been doing that for around 2 years, but all the sudden when I go to change the resolution of the game, my game just freezes. I can hear my mouse moving around, interacting with the buttons still, but the screen is just frozen. When I alt + tab in and out of the game, I can see what happens, but only for a split second, then it goes back to being frozen. My Specsrocessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1035G4 CPU @ 1.10GHz
