XP,Home Edition,SP3 in current computer



In the near future I will have a new pc with Norton protection..Recently

experienced malware threats but my pc seems to working ok for now..I

basically have 90 to 95 % of personal files on backup being done before the

computer was infected..However, if I decide I need to transfer some files I

may want to use into the new pc how do I be sure those new files are

clean..I have Norton in current pc which came with the pc in 2003 which I

have never updated and I use it to scan and seems to work ok..Would this be

the thing to do before I transfer to new pc or scan with new Norton in the

new pc before these files are open..Hope I am clear to you..Thanks,Nick

If you never updated your 2003 version of NAV then it would be close to

useless by now. While I do not have any figures to support my claim, I

suspect that 90% of all viruses in the wild today did not exist in 2003. In

other words, your old version of NAV protects you only against 10% of all

viruses.



If this was my machine then I would do things in this order:

1. Remove Norton. It can cause quite a few problems.

2. Install Microsoft Security Essentials

(http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/) on both PCs. It's effective,

it's free and so far I haven't heard any negative reports.

3. Transfer your files.

4. Perform a full scan.

Note that Microsoft Security Essentials requires at least Windows XP and

will not run on pirated versions of Windows.

Get an update AV and keep it up todate. Outdated AV programs without

updating them are nearly worthless. Norton's NIS is a good buy right now &

works very well if you're sticking to Norton stuff. Whatever you get, it's

useless if you don't use the update features OFTEN!!



Disconnect from the internet:



For this, one of the free AV programs will be the most useful. MSE, AVG,

Avast, etc..:



Where do the files reside right now?

Install your AV there

Do a complete scan.

When clean, transfer the files.

Uninstall AV on computer files were copied to.

Reinstall AV on computer files were copied to.

Repeat the scan on the new computer.

NOW you can register/activate the AV.



Done.
