Saved files removed from portable hard drive after Windows 11 installation

Earlier I ran into a problem where I could not type in my password (nor see a password box). After reading multiple Microsoft forums I was finally lead to reinstalling Windows 11. Here's where the issue started. I thought I was able to just use my portable hard drive, which contained saved files (and a capacity of around 1tb) to install Windows 11. However after installing the program I noticed that the name of the hard drive has changed and the max storage is now only 30 gigs. I'm wondering if this is supposed to happen? More importantly, are the files recoverable?
